What is Botox?
Botulinum toxin type A is a purified protein; Botox is simply the best-known trade name for it. Once injected, it weakens the targeted muscle for a limited time. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons names a number of brands in this family – Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau® and Daxxify® among them – and in daily conversation "Botox" is used for all of them.
Muscles contract because a nerve sends them a chemical message. Botulinum toxin interrupts that message at the point of injection. A muscle that can only contract weakly no longer creases the overlying skin as deeply, so the line it produces becomes softer. Over the following months the nerve endings recover and the muscle slowly works normally again.
Because it is a prescription drug, botulinum toxin belongs in the hands of a physician with sound knowledge of facial anatomy. Doses are always worked out for the particular brand in use, since one product's units do not translate directly into another's.
Which areas can Botox treat?
The best candidates are dynamic lines – creases that form with movement, such as frowning, lifting the brows or smiling.
| Zone | Concern | How it is usually treated |
|---|---|---|
| Between the brows (glabella) | Vertical "11" frown lines | Low doses placed in the frowning muscles |
| Forehead | Horizontal creases when the brows lift | Light doses, positioned so the brows keep their height |
| Outer eye corners | Crow's feet fanning out when smiling | Commonly three injection points per side |
| Jaw angle (masseter) | Square lower face from bulky chewing muscles; clenching | Injections into each masseter |
| Armpits | Hyperhidrosis (heavy sweating) | A grid of small injections just under the skin |
Lines that remain when the face is completely still, or hollows from lost volume, often call for dermal fillers instead, or for a mix of both. Thin, crepe-like skin tends to do better with skin booster injections or facial mesotherapy.
Is Botox right for me?
| Generally a good fit | Postpone, or look at alternatives |
|---|---|
| Movement lines on the forehead, around the eyes or between the brows | Deep folds or hollowing from volume loss |
| A healthy adult hoping for a soft, natural change | Being pregnant or breastfeeding |
| Wide lower face from strong masseters, or clenching | Myasthenia gravis or a similar neuromuscular disorder |
| Underarm sweating that antiperspirants have not controlled | Inflamed or infected skin where the injection would go |
| Wanting a treatment that needs no time off | Allergy to botulinum toxin or any component |
Bruising becomes more likely with some medicines and supplements, and a small number of drugs can interact with botulinum toxin. Let Dr. Yazır know everything you are taking, blood thinners and any recent course of antibiotics included.
How is the treatment performed?
- Looking at your face. Dr. Yazır observes how your face moves and how it looks relaxed, notes the brow and eyelid position and any difference between the two sides, and asks what bothers you.
- Mapping the dose. Injection sites and amounts are marked to suit your muscles. The forehead needs particular care here. In a randomised trial that compared three injection patterns on the forehead, each pattern changed both the lines and the brow height in its own way, and placing the points higher up helped avoid a heavy, dropped brow.
- The injections. The skin is cleaned and tiny volumes are placed with an ultra-fine needle. Expect the appointment to take about 15–20 minutes.
- What to do afterwards. Daily life can resume at once. The usual advice is to keep your head upright for a few hours, leave the treated skin alone (no rubbing or massage), and skip hard workouts, saunas and facial treatments until the next day.
What results can I expect?
Most people see a first change after two to five days, with the effect reaching its peak at around two weeks. In frown lines, a meta-analysis that pooled nine randomised controlled trials showed a clearly higher rate of improvement than placebo, while side effects did not differ meaningfully. For crow's feet, two phase 3 trials with 1,362 participants reported significantly better outcomes than placebo at day 30.
Facial results generally hold for three to four months, occasionally longer. As the muscles regain strength, the lines reappear slowly rather than overnight. Plenty of patients choose two or three sessions a year, and there is no reason to re-treat while the last effect is still present.
What does recovery look like?
| After treatment | Typical course |
|---|---|
| The first few hours | Tiny raised spots and some redness at the needle sites, gone quickly |
| Days 1 to 3 | Nothing visible yet; a light headache or a small bruise can occur |
| Days 2 to 5 | Muscle activity eases and the creases start to soften |
| Around week 2 | Peak effect; checked at the clinic or with photos sent on WhatsApp |
| Months 3 to 4 | The effect slowly wears off and a repeat session can be booked |
How do I plan my trip to Izmir?
With no recovery period, Botox slots neatly into a short trip or a holiday on the Aegean coast. Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) is roughly 25–30 minutes by car from the clinic in the Egeperla building in Konak.
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | You arrive, have the consultation and, where appropriate, the injections |
| Day 2 | Ordinary routine; only saunas and strenuous exercise are skipped on day one |
| From day 2 | You can fly home; the two-week check is done with photos |
Thinking about fillers or another facial treatment as well? These can frequently be arranged during the same stay. Photos sent over WhatsApp in advance allow a first impression, but the actual plan is decided at the face-to-face examination.
Can Botox slim the jaw or help with teeth clenching?
When the chewing muscles are enlarged (masseter hypertrophy), the lower face can look broad and angular. Botulinum toxin placed in the masseter makes it relax, and in the weeks afterwards the muscle may shrink, giving a softer jaw contour. Some patients who clench their teeth also say the jaw feels less tight.
The evidence here deserves a frank description. A Cochrane review looked for well-designed controlled trials of botulinum toxin in benign masseter hypertrophy, found none that met its standards, and recommended better research. In practice the treatment is used widely and is usually seen as less invasive than surgery, but how much it helps and for how long differs from person to person. Before suggesting it, Dr. Yazır checks whether the width of your jaw comes from muscle, bone or fat. Where a full, rounded lower face is due to fat, double chin lipolysis or a jawline filler may suit you better.
Can Botox help with excessive sweating?
Yes. Sweat glands are also driven by nerve signals, and botulinum toxin blocks these for a time in the area injected. In a placebo-controlled randomised trial of 145 people with severe underarm sweating, the average sweat output fell from 192 mg per minute to 24 mg per minute two weeks after injection and was still far below the baseline at 24 weeks.
The American Academy of Dermatology notes that most patients find they sweat less within 7 to 10 days, and that results in the armpits or palms tend to last between 3 and 10 months. It is generally offered once antiperspirants have proved insufficient.
Botulinum toxin has medical uses too – chronic migraine, for example. Those are neurological treatments planned by a neurologist and fall outside the scope of this page.
What are the risks of Botox?
Cosmetic use of botulinum toxin has been studied in very large patient groups. A systematic review covering 35 clinical studies and 8,787 participants supported its short-term safety. Treatment-related effects reported in the upper face were eyelid drooping (2.5%), a lower-sitting brow (3.1%) and eye symptoms such as dryness (3%); in the lower face the main one was temporary imbalance or asymmetry of the lips (6.9%). Each of these went away by itself. In the crow's feet trials, the only side effect seen in at least 1 in 100 patients was mild swelling of the eyelid (1%).
Side effects that can occur:
- A small bruise, redness, swelling or tenderness where the needle went in
- A light headache during the first few days
- A brow that feels heavy or sits lower, or a drooping upper lid
- Uneven results, which can frequently be evened out at the follow-up
- Dryness of the eyes, or a change to the smile, after treatment near the eyes or mouth
- An allergic reaction, which is uncommon
The prescribing information for these products also cautions that in very rare cases the effect can travel beyond the injected area and lead to trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing. If you experience any such symptom, get medical help straight away.
Since the drug wears off, most of these effects are short-lived as well. Measured dosing, accurate placement and a good grasp of the facial muscles do the most to keep them to a minimum.
Why does the injector's background matter?
Brow, forehead and eye area are moved by a group of small muscles that pull against one another. Weakening one of them without accounting for the rest can drop the brows or alter the shape of the eyes. Dr. Yazır is an ENT and head & neck surgeon whose practice focuses on facial aesthetic surgery, and he also performs brow lift and eyelid surgery. Knowing the upper face from the surgical side helps him choose a dose that eases the lines and leaves your expressions looking like your own.
Why do patients choose Izmir for Botox?
The treatment is short and needs no time off, which makes it easy to pair with a holiday or with another procedure. Many European cities have direct flights to Izmir, and consultation, injections and aftercare guidance usually fit into one day. The price table above also shows that costs in Turkey tend to be well below those in the UK or USA, with the injections performed by a facial surgeon.
