What are cheek fillers?
In this treatment a volumising hyaluronic acid (HA) gel is injected into the cheeks and along the cheekbones to give back volume and shape. You may also hear it called cheekbone filler or malar augmentation. Enhancing the cheeks is one of the uses the FDA has approved for absorbable fillers.
As the years pass, the midface slowly loses both volume and support. Cheeks can start to look flatter, which in turn can deepen the tear trough below the eyes and the folds between nose and mouth. Putting volume back where it is missing can make the face look fresher and less tired, without an operation.
Who is a good candidate for cheek fillers?
| Generally a good fit | Wait, or talk it through first |
|---|---|
| Cheeks that have flattened, or midface volume lost with age | Marked skin laxity that calls for a surgical lift |
| Cheekbones that are flat or not well defined by nature | A skin infection or acne flare on the cheeks |
| A small difference between the two cheeks | Being pregnant or breastfeeding |
| Hollow cheeks after losing weight | Earlier permanent (non-HA) filler in this area |
| Wanting a natural, balanced change | Wanting very high, sharply "sculpted" cheeks that do not fit the face |
If lax skin bothers you more than lost volume, a midface lift may achieve more. If, on the other hand, the lower cheeks are too full, buccal fat removal may be the subject to discuss.
How are cheek fillers placed?
Published in 2021, a systematic review of 18 studies on seven HA products used in the midface reported high patient satisfaction lasting up to 24 months. It described upper-cheek injections near the cheekbone as usually going deep, beneath the muscle and close to the bone, whereas the lower cheek is treated in the subcutaneous layer. No single ideal protocol emerged, and the authors recommended individualised treatment.
| Zone | Possible change | Usual depth |
|---|---|---|
| Upper and outer cheek (cheekbone) | A clearer, more lifted cheekbone | Deep, near the bone |
| Front of the cheek | Fullness that age has taken away | Deep, under the skin, or both |
| Lower cheek | A shallower hollow below the cheekbone | Under the skin |
How is the treatment performed?
- Consultation. Dr. Yazır studies your face at rest and while smiling, from the front and at an angle, and takes photos.
- Planning. Injection sites and volume are marked. The idea is to support the midface, not just to make the cheeks bigger.
- Numbing. Anaesthetic cream is applied, and the filler normally contains lidocaine.
- Injecting. Small amounts are placed with a needle, a blunt cannula or both, and symmetry is checked as the work goes on.
- Afterwards. Cooling packs are applied, and you go home with written aftercare instructions and an emergency contact number.
How should I prepare for the treatment?
There is not much to do beforehand, but the following helps limit bruising and keeps the day simple:
- Give Dr. Yazır a full list of your medicines and supplements – especially blood thinners, aspirin, fish oil and vitamin E. Never stop a prescribed drug without your doctor's approval.
- Let him know about allergies, easy bruising, any filler you have had before (and its name, if you know it) and skin problems.
- Tell the clinic about upcoming dental treatment or vaccinations: the FDA notes that swelling or redness near filler can occasionally follow infections, vaccinations or dental procedures.
- Do not drink alcohol the day before, and come with clean skin and no make-up on the cheeks.
- For an initial opinion before you travel, you can send photos over WhatsApp.
What does recovery look like?
According to the systematic review, the most frequent side effects – bruising, swelling and tenderness – generally lasted two weeks at most.
| After treatment | Typical course |
|---|---|
| The first 24–48 hours | Swelling and soreness, maybe a bruise; no exercise, alcohol or pressure on the cheeks |
| Days 3 to 7 | Swelling going down; the cheeks may still feel a little firm |
| Around 2 weeks | The filler has settled; result checked and any top-up planned |
| 12 to 24 months | The effect slowly softens as the gel is absorbed |
How do I plan my trip to Izmir?
1–2 days is usually enough. The clinic is in the Egeperla building in Konak, roughly 25–30 minutes by car from Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB).
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Consultation, photos and injections |
| Day 2 | An optional check of swelling and symmetry; you fly home once Dr. Yazır agrees |
| Around 2 weeks on | Follow-up with photos sent over WhatsApp |
When a broader midface plan is made, the cheeks are frequently treated in the same visit as under-eye fillers or nasolabial fold fillers.
How long do cheek fillers last?
Over two years, a randomised controlled study evaluated a volumising HA gel in adults whose midface had lost volume with age. At six months, 85.6% of treated patients had improved by one point or more on a midface volume scale, and at 24 months almost half still kept the correction. How long it lasts in your case depends on you, the product and the volume used.
What are the risks of cheek fillers?
Side effects are mostly mild and pass on their own, but as with every filler, serious complications can happen in rare cases:
- Bruising, swelling and soreness
- Unevenness or small lumps
- An overfilled, unnatural look when too much product is used
- Infection, or inflamed nodules appearing later
- Vascular occlusion – filler blocking a blood vessel, which can damage the skin
When the American Academy of Ophthalmology reviewed filler-related vision loss in 2025, most cases followed injections in the nose, forehead or glabella. Cheek injections made up very few of the reported cases, yet the risk is not zero. Expert consensus emphasises solid anatomical knowledge, careful technique and being ready to treat a complication at once, hyaluronidase included. Why do patients choose Izmir for cheek fillers?
Only a brief stay is needed, so cheek filler fits easily into a visit to Izmir on the Aegean coast. As an ENT and head & neck surgeon whose practice focuses on facial aesthetic surgery, Dr. Yazır looks at the whole midface – eyes, nose and jawline included – and will talk about surgical options if they fit your goals better. Prices are also lower than in the UK or USA – the estimated comparison is shown below. Other areas are covered in our dermal fillers overview.
