What is hair mesotherapy?
In hair mesotherapy, many shallow injections place active substances into the scalp skin exactly where the hair has become thinner. Depending on the product these can be vitamins, amino acids, hyaluronic acid or medicines.
The reasoning behind it was set out in a 2023 systematic review: an injection into the skin holds the ingredient in the treated zone for longer, which may make smaller doses possible. The same review listed many groups of substances that have been tested, ranging from vitamin blends to drugs like dutasteride and minoxidil.
Why must the type of hair loss be diagnosed first?
The American Academy of Dermatology points out that treating hair loss well starts with identifying why it is happening. There are many kinds of hair loss, and mesotherapy only fits some of them.
| Kind of hair loss | How it usually shows | Where mesotherapy stands |
|---|---|---|
| Hereditary (androgenetic) hair loss | In men a receding hairline or thinning crown; in women a wider parting | May be used as a supporting treatment |
| Telogen effluvium (shedding) | Shedding all over the head a few months after illness, giving birth, stress or dieting | Find the trigger first; often recovers by itself |
| Alopecia areata | Round, smooth bald patches | The immune process needs medical treatment |
| Scarring alopecias | Shiny, red scalp with follicle openings disappearing | Requires a dermatology diagnosis; mesotherapy unsuitable |
| Hair loss with a medical cause | Thyroid disorders, low iron, side effects of medicines | Treat the root cause first |
The AAD names hereditary thinning as the leading cause of hair loss worldwide and notes that early treatment gives better results. Before planning any injection, Dr. Yazır asks about your history and examines the scalp, and if needed he suggests blood tests or a referral to a dermatologist.
Who is a good candidate for hair mesotherapy?
| Often a good match | Better to hold off or talk it through |
|---|---|
| Hereditary thinning at an early or moderate stage | Areas that have been fully bald for years |
| Thin hair where follicles are still active | Hair loss whose cause is still unknown |
| Patients on medical therapy wanting extra support | Scalp infection or inflammation |
| Expecting slow, gradual change | Pregnant or breastfeeding |
| Ready to finish a course plus maintenance | Bleeding disorders or blood thinners (discuss beforehand) |
What does the evidence show?
Put simply: hair mesotherapy shows promise, but the proof is not complete.
- Reviewing 27 studies, a 2023 systematic review saw statistically significant gains in hair growth in several of them. It concluded, though, that regimens are not standardised and that bigger controlled trials are required, and it recorded reported side effects.
- In pattern hair loss specifically, a 2022 systematic review found some positive effect in every included study and no significant side effects, but stressed the small numbers of patients and the scarce comparison with other treatments.
- The European evidence-based (S3) guideline on androgenetic alopecia gives recommendations for established therapies. In everyday practice, mesotherapy belongs next to medical treatment prescribed after diagnosis, not in place of it.
If you are also thinking about PRP, have a look at PRP treatment for hair loss; there is more research on PRP in androgenetic alopecia.
How is hair mesotherapy performed?
- Consultation and diagnosis. Your history is taken, the scalp is examined and standardised photos are made. Blood tests may be advised.
- Getting ready. The scalp is disinfected with an antiseptic, and sensitive zones can be numbed with cream.
- The injections. A very fine needle delivers small amounts of solution across the thinning areas in a grid.
- Afterwards. Daily activities can continue immediately. Washing the hair is usually postponed for around 24 hours.
Dr. Yazır carries out every session himself at his clinic in the Egeperla building, Konak, Izmir.
What does recovery look like?
| When | Typical course |
|---|---|
| Same day | Slight soreness, little red dots or bumps on the scalp |
| Days 1 to 2 | The marks fade; you can wash your hair after roughly 24 hours |
| Weeks 2 to 4 | Following session of the course |
| Months 3 to 6 | First noticeable change in shedding or thickness, if it is working |
| Once the course ends | Progress checked against photos; maintenance arranged |
Because hair grows slowly, one or two sessions are too early to judge. Standardised photos taken months apart tell you more than how your hair looks on a given day.
How do I plan my trip to Izmir?
A course lasts several months, so the treatment suits people who come to Izmir often, stay for a while, or add it to another treatment they already have planned.
| Stage | Timing that usually works |
|---|---|
| First trip | Consultation, diagnosis and session one; tests organised if needed |
| While staying longer | A session every 2 to 4 weeks |
| Return trips | Remaining sessions and progress photos |
| In between | Any prescribed medical treatment at home |
The clinic is in Konak, about 25 to 30 minutes by car from Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB). Before travelling you can send scalp photos and a brief history by WhatsApp. Dr. Yazır confirms the plan only after examining you in person.
What are the risks of hair mesotherapy?
Even though it is minimally invasive, scalp mesotherapy remains a medical injection. Side effects may include:
- Soreness, redness and little bumps where the needle went in
- A brief headache or tender scalp
- Bruises or slight bleeding
- Allergy to one of the ingredients
- Infection
- Hair loss after the injections; a 2022 review drew attention to reported alopecia following mesotherapy, mostly with unregulated products
This is part of why the product, where it comes from and how it is injected all matter. Dr. Yazır uses only the product agreed at the consultation and checks your health history beforehand.
How long do results last?
Where mesotherapy does help, the benefit is not lasting on its own, particularly in hereditary hair loss, which keeps progressing. Keeping the gain usually requires maintenance every few months and ongoing medical treatment. Once all treatment stops, hair loss generally carries on along its natural course.
