What is dark circle mesotherapy?

The treatment consists of a series of tiny, shallow injections into the skin beneath the eyes. The solution usually contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamins, antioxidants or tranexamic acid, chosen to improve moisture, texture and patchy colour.

Think of it as care for the skin, not as a way to add volume. A hollow will not be filled and eyelid bags will not go away. So before anything is injected, the key question is why your under-eye area looks dark.

What causes dark circles under the eyes?

More than one factor is usually involved. Cleveland Clinic names ageing, genes, eczema and allergies, rubbing the eyes, too little sleep, pigment from sun exposure and lifestyle habits as frequent causes. Medical reviews sort them into a handful of main groups.

GroupHow it looksWhy it happens
PigmentedBrownish lower-lid skinToo much melanin, from genes, sun or pigment left behind after eczema or rubbing
VascularBluish, purple or pink hue, often stronger when you are tiredSkin so thin that vessels and muscle show through
StructuralShadow sitting in a groove or under a bagHollow tear trough, lost volume, fat bags or lax skin
MixedFeatures of several groupsA combination of causes

In a clinical study that used Wood's lamp and ultrasound to classify dark circles, the mixed type was found in most patients rather than one isolated cause. That explains why one treatment does not suit everyone.

Who is a good candidate for dark circle mesotherapy?

The treatment helps most when the skin itself is the source of the darkness: pigment, dullness, or thin and dry skin. It does far less when a hollow or bag throws a shadow.

Often a good matchAnother treatment may be better, or discuss first
Brown pigment under the eyesDeep tear trough hollow; under-eye fillers may suit
Thin, dull or crepey lower-lid skinObvious fat bags or extra skin; eyelid surgery may suit
Light darkness with fine linesEczema, infection or allergy flaring around the eyes
Mixed dark circles within a combined planPregnant or breastfeeding
Expecting slow, partial improvementHoping the darkness will vanish entirely

Dr. Yazır looks at the area under several types of light and from different angles. A shadow from a hollow shifts as the light moves, whereas pigment stays the same.

How does mesotherapy compare with other options?

One systematic review of treatments for periorbital hyperpigmentation concluded that fillers and fat grafting work best when volume loss causes the darkness, blepharoplasty when skin laxity does, and topical creams or chemical peels when pigment is the cause. The authors added that good-quality evidence is limited.

For under-eye pigment, a small randomised split-face trial put PRP against tranexamic acid with vitamin C mesotherapy; both sides improved by a comparable amount. In 2025, a systematic review comparing PRP with platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) around the eyes suggested PRP did better for pigment, while PRF was linked with better texture and fewer fine lines.

How is dark circle mesotherapy performed?

  1. Assessment. Dr. Yazır inspects the under-eye skin in varied lighting and explains which type of dark circle you have.
  2. Getting ready. After cleansing, a numbing cream stays on the skin for roughly 20 to 30 minutes.
  3. The injections. A very fine needle places the solution just under the surface in small, evenly spaced points. This step lasts only a few minutes.
  4. Afterwards. A cool compress can help, and it is best to go without make-up for the rest of the day.

Dr. Yazır carries out every session himself at his clinic in the Egeperla building, Konak, Izmir.

What does recovery look like?

Real downtime is uncommon, though the fine skin under the eyes may show needle marks briefly.

After the sessionTypical course
Same dayLittle bumps where the needle entered, slight redness
Days 1 to 3Bumps gone; any puffiness is going down
Days 3 to 7Small bruises, if present, are fading
Weeks 2 to 4Following session when a course is planned
Once the course endsSkin tone and texture improve step by step

For around 24 hours, do not rub your eyes, and skip saunas and hard exercise. Wear sun protection, as sunlight can deepen pigment.

How do I plan my trip to Izmir?

A course stretches over several weeks, so this treatment works best with a longer stay or several trips.

OptionTiming that usually works
One visitConsultation and first session on day 1, review on day 2 if needed
Stay of 3 to 4 weeksA session every 2 to 3 weeks while you are here
Several tripsThe remaining sessions fitted around later visits
Combined planFiller or eyelid surgery planned separately, on its own schedule

Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) is roughly 25 to 30 minutes by car from the clinic in Konak. Before you travel you can send photos by WhatsApp; take them in daylight with no make-up so the type of darkness is easier to judge. Dr. Yazır finalises the plan only after seeing you in person.

What are the risks of dark circle mesotherapy?

Although the procedure is minimally invasive, under-eye skin is thin and reactive. Side effects can include:

  • Redness, puffiness and little bumps
  • Bruises
  • Short-term soreness
  • Allergy or sensitivity to one of the ingredients
  • Infection (uncommon)
  • Patchy results or hardly any change, especially when the cause is structural

To lower these risks, your health history, medicines and allergies are checked before treatment.

How long do results last?

Your anatomy and genes stay the same after mesotherapy, so the effect is temporary. Many patients return for maintenance from time to time and support it with sunscreen, enough sleep and treatment of allergies or eczema. Across the literature, the same message keeps coming back: success depends on choosing the treatment that matches the cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can mesotherapy help with all dark circles?

It cannot. It fits best when the darkness comes mostly from pigment or from thin, lacklustre skin. A hollow tear trough or puffy eyelid bags create shadows through structure, and fillers or eyelid surgery usually address those better.

How many sessions are usually needed?

Most courses involve 3 to 4 sessions, 2 to 4 weeks apart. The cause, how deep the darkness is and how your skin reacts decide the final number.

Does it hurt under the eyes?

Numbing cream goes on first, so patients mostly feel light pinpricks. Skin in this area is delicate and a little discomfort is to be expected.

Is bruising likely?

The tiny bumps usually go down within hours or by the next day. Because the area is rich in small blood vessels, a bruise can appear and may need several days to clear.

What does the solution contain?

Under-eye solutions typically mix ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, vitamins, antioxidants or tranexamic acid. Dr. Yazır picks the product at the consultation based on the kind of darkness you have.

Are the results permanent?

No, the change develops slowly and wears off. Sun, sleep, allergies and age keep influencing the area, so maintenance sessions are needed in most cases.

Can it be paired with under-eye fillers?

Yes, for mixed dark circles. Filler can correct a hollow tear trough, while mesotherapy works on skin colour and quality. The two are normally scheduled on different days.

When is under-eye mesotherapy not advised?

It is generally delayed in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, if there is eczema or infection around the eyes, or if you are allergic to a planned ingredient. Your health history is checked before any treatment.
