What are lip fillers?
In a lip filler treatment, a soft hyaluronic acid (HA) gel is injected into the lips to give more volume, a better shape or a more even look. The skin produces hyaluronic acid on its own; in fillers it is cross-linked, which is what lets it stay for months instead of a few days.
Possible goals include fuller lips in someone whose lips are naturally thin, replacing fullness lost over the years, sharpening the lip border (vermilion border) and Cupid's bow, or lifting mouth corners that point downwards. The effect does not last forever, and HA gel can be dissolved if required. Where the aim is a lasting change in upper lip height, a surgical lip lift may be the better topic to discuss.
Who is a good candidate for lip fillers?
According to Cleveland Clinic, the basics are good general health, realistic expectations and no infection in the mouth, cold sores included. At the consultation we also talk about your own reasons for treatment and whether anyone else is pushing you towards it.
| Generally a good fit | Wait, or talk it through first |
|---|---|
| Lips that are naturally thin or uneven | A cold sore or mouth infection at the moment |
| Lips that have become flatter or less defined over time | Being pregnant or breastfeeding |
| A flat Cupid's bow or a blurred lip border | Dental work just done or booked in the coming days |
| Mouth corners that turn down | Earlier permanent (non-HA) filler in the lips |
| Hoping for a gradual, natural-looking change | Wanting an exact copy of someone else's lips |
How is lip filler planned?
Good lip treatment is about more than a number of millilitres. A 2025 expert framework on natural-looking lip augmentation sets out five steps – interview, documentation, anatomical assessment, assessment of lip structure and finally treatment – and separates beautification, which enhances lips that are already well formed, from restoration, which rebuilds structure that age has worn away.
| Aim | Usual target |
|---|---|
| Fuller lips | The body of the top lip, the bottom lip or both |
| Sharper outline | Vermilion border and Cupid's bow |
| Evening out the sides | Extra filler placed only on the smaller side |
| Gentler mouth corners | Support at the oral commissures |
| Restoring an older lip | Structure, height of the lip and fine lines around the mouth |
Cleveland Clinic mentions that roughly 1 ml per session is typical. A modest start means the result can be reviewed and fine-tuned, instead of overfilled.
How is the treatment performed?
- Consultation and photos. Dr. Yazır examines your lips and the lower part of your face, and together you agree on the aim.
- Numbing. Anaesthetic cream stays on for roughly 15–30 minutes. Lidocaine is already in many lip fillers, and some patients receive a small nerve block.
- Injecting. Tiny amounts go in through a fine needle or a cannula, and the shape is built up step by step.
- Checking and cooling. Symmetry is checked, the lips are softly moulded where needed and a cold pack keeps swelling down.
What does recovery look like?
| After treatment | Typical course |
|---|---|
| The first 24 hours | Swelling, soreness, maybe a bruise; skip lip products, straws, smoking and hard exercise |
| Days 2 and 3 | Swelling going down; the lips can feel firm or a little uneven |
| Within a week | Remaining swelling disappears |
| Around 2 weeks | Result reviewed; a small top-up planned if necessary |
Swelling can make the lips look bigger and less symmetrical for the first few days. Wait about two weeks before judging the final shape.
How do I plan my trip to Izmir?
Because the treatment is brief, 1–2 days in Izmir is usually enough. The clinic is in the Egeperla building in Konak, about 25–30 minutes by car from Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB).
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Consultation and injections |
| Day 2 | An optional check of swelling and symmetry; you fly home once Dr. Yazır agrees |
| Around 2 weeks on | Follow-up with photos sent over WhatsApp |
When lip filler is part of a holiday on the Aegean coast, doing it at the start of your stay lets the swelling calm down before holiday photos or the journey home.
How long do lip fillers last?
Cleveland Clinic puts the usual duration at 12–18 months, varying from person to person. In a 2021 meta-analysis, the share of patients with a measurable gain in lip fullness peaked two months after treatment and then fell slowly at six and twelve months. This is why most people book a top-up sooner or later to keep the result.
What are the risks of lip fillers?
A 2026 meta-analysis of randomised trials reported that swelling, firmness, bruising and tenderness were frequent, whereas serious adverse events were rare. Risks to be aware of:
- Bruising, swelling, soreness and short-term firmness
- Unevenness or small lumps
- A cold sore flaring up again
- Filler spreading past the lip border (migration), particularly after overfilling
- Infection or nodules that appear later
- Vascular occlusion – filler blocking an artery of the lip, which can damage the skin and needs treatment at once
Hyaluronidase breaks down HA filler. It is used to correct an unwanted result and, as an emergency, to clear a blocked vessel. Get in touch with the clinic immediately if you notice severe pain, a pale or dusky area on the lip, or blisters in the days after treatment.
Can lip fillers be combined with other treatments?
Yes. The lips are frequently planned alongside neighbouring areas to keep the lower face in proportion. Typical pairings are lip lines filler for fine vertical lines above the lip, jawline and chin fillers when a small chin makes the lips seem too prominent, and support for the corners of the mouth. If the gap between nose and upper lip is long, filler on its own can make the lip look heavy, and a surgical lip lift may then be discussed. The overall amount used in one visit stays within sensible limits.
Why do patients choose Izmir for lip fillers?
Lip filler fits into a short trip, and many European cities have direct flights to Izmir. As an ENT and head & neck surgeon whose practice focuses on facial aesthetic surgery, Dr. Yazır plans the lips in proportion to the nose, the chin and the face as a whole. Prices are also lower than in the UK or USA – the estimated comparison is shown below. For more background, read about dermal fillers in general and lip lines filler.
